For lightning monitoring and early warning, the DPF Sensors AEFM-001 is an atmospheric electric field meter that measures in real time the electric field variations associated with lightning activity.
It measures from -100 to +100 kV/m with a response time of 3 seconds and transmits the field strength value in V/m, rotational speed, and alarm level via Modbus RS-485. It has three configurable thresholds: 3, 8, and 10 kV/m by default. When the field exceeds a threshold, the alarm level rises to 1, 2, or 3.
It is used in weather stations (providing reference information for sectors such as aviation and maritime operations), petrochemical plants, communications base stations, electrical installations, high-rise buildings, agriculture, and forestry. How does the AEFM-001 generate the lightning alert?
It compares the measured electric field with three thresholds, 3, 8, and 10 kV/m by default. When the field exceeds a threshold, the alarm level register (0x0008) is set to 1, 2, or 3. The thresholds are modified by writing to registers 0x000A, 0x000C, and 0x000E.
How is the electric field read by Modbus?
Using function 03 on register 0x0006, which is 4 bytes, the value is in V/m, with one decimal place by default. The default address is 245 and the transmission speed is chosen in register 0x0004, between 2400 and 115200.
How do I connect the AEFM-001?
With a shielded 4-wire cable: red, power; blue, GND; green, 485B; yellow, 485A. The specifications indicate 12V DC (0.8W at 12V) and the cable color code, 12~24V DC: please confirm with Guemisa before ordering.
