When encoders are mounted on shafts subjected to extreme stress, oversized pulleys, or heavy asymmetrical loads, standard encoders fail quickly due to bearing breakage. The 790A Absolute Multiturn Encoder is designed precisely for these extreme mechanical demands, featuring a heavy-duty bearing train capable of withstanding up to 15 kg of continuous radial/axial load.
Without sacrificing precision for its mechanical shielding, it integrates fully programmable technology of up to 16 bits (65,536 positions) and 12 bits of revolutions (4,096 revolutions) via a 500 kHz SSI synchronous interface. This digital readout is complemented by auxiliary Sin/Cos outputs at 1024 ppr (or RS422), providing the PLC with simultaneous speed and position readings on the same cable run.
Its robust anodized aluminum chassis houses a reinforced solid stainless steel shaft (Ø 12 mm h7). Regarding ingress protection, it starts with a standard IP66 rating, which can be upgraded to a very high IP67 with Option Z, ideal for industries with pressure washing. How is the initial position of the encoder calibrated on the factory floor?
The model features a dedicated PRESET input. Applying a control voltage to this signal resets the internal count to the preset zero; this reset can also be commanded via software or ASCII communication (RS422).
Does the IP67 protection level limit the maximum speed?
Yes. The extreme sealing (Option Z / IP67) causes greater friction of the seals against the shaft, which raises the starting torque to 150 gcm and recommends limiting continuous RPM to 3000 (compared to 6000 RPM for the IP66 version).
How does the 790A differ from the standard 790?
The 790A is structurally reinforced "Heavy Duty": the shaft diameter increases from 10 to 12 mm, the radial/axial load capacity triples (from 5 Kg to 15 Kg) and the environmental protection ratings range from IP66 to IP67.
