MUP-410-11 – Signal conditioner for potentiometric sensors

Galvanic isolation, teach-in function, and configurable voltage or current outputs

The Novotechnik MUP-410-11 is a signal conditioner for linear and rotary potentiometric position sensors. It converts the signal from the potentiometer into a standardized analog voltage or current signal, facilitating its connection to PLCs, SCADA systems, data acquisition equipment, and industrial automation systems.

The device allows you to configure different output signals using DIP switches. Available options include: 0…2 V, 0…5 V, 0…10 V, ±10 V, 0…5 mA, 0…20 mA and 4…20 mA. The default setting for the MUP-410-11 model is 4…20 mA, although it can be modified directly on the equipment without needing to replace the conditioner.

The high-impedance input measures the cursor signal with virtually no load on the potentiometer sensor. This preserves the accuracy, linearity, and stability characteristics of the connected potentiometer. The MUP-410-11 also provides a stable internal voltage to power the sensor and transform its linear or angular position into a proportional and easily processable signal.

He galvanic isolation using DC/DC transformers It electrically isolates the different circuits of the system. Its dielectric strength reaches 2.5 kVAC for one minute between power supply and input, as well as between input and output. This isolation helps reduce problems caused by potential differences, ground loops, and electrical disturbances, especially when the signal must be transmitted over long distances within an industrial facility.

Start-up is simplified by the function teach-in and the two front pushbuttons. The user can save the start and end points of the used travel and adapt the standardized output to the actual stroke or angle of the sensor. The span can be configured between 80 % and 100 % of the total range, so it is not necessary to use the entire available mechanical travel. The device also detects values above or below the configured range.

Its 24-bit Sigma-Delta A/D converter, measurement speed of up to 7.2 kHz, the accuracy of up to ±0.02 % of the full scale and a response time of less than 160 µs This allows its use in dynamic applications for measurement, regulation, and position control. Low thermal drift helps maintain stable conversion despite temperature changes.

Applications of the MUP-410-11 signal conditioner

  • Potentiometric linear sensors.
  • Potentiometric rotary sensors.
  • Linear and angular position measurement.
  • Conversion of potentiometric signals to 4…20 mA or 0…10 V.
  • Integration of position sensors with PLC and SCADA systems.
  • Data acquisition and recording systems.
  • Test benches and testing equipment.
  • Motion control and positioning systems.
  • Industrial machinery and automated lines.
  • Transmission of position signals over long distances.

Industrial installation and integration

The MUP-410-11 is powered by a voltage of 10…30 VDC It is mounted on a 35 mm DIN rail. Its compact 25 mm wide housing facilitates installation in electrical panels, control cabinets, and decentralized automation systems. Connections are made via terminals for conductors up to 1.5 mm².

To obtain a stable signal and reduce the length of the potentiometer wiring, it is recommended to install the signal conditioner close to the sensor. The standardized voltage or current signal can then be transmitted to the control system, even when there is a considerable distance between the measurement point and the PLC or data acquisition equipment.
