Properties

What is illuminance (lux)?
Lux provides information about illuminance. It is a measure of the brightness with which an area is illuminated. Lux indicates the amount of luminous flux (lumen) from a light source that reaches a receiver per unit area. The lux value is a purely receptor-related quantity.

Illuminance is calculated using the following formula: Lux [lx] = luminous flux [lm] / surface [m2]

Illuminance is 1 lux when a luminous flux of 1 lumen falls uniformly on a surface of 1 m². Another formula for calculating illuminance at greater distances is: Lux [lx] = luminous intensity [cd] / radius or distance squared.
A lux meter measures luminance (lux). The value indicates the brightness at the measuring point. The lux meter consists of a photo sensor and electronics that convert the signal into a tractable value.
Sunlight can reach a value of 50,000 Lx.
